Spain launches Digital Nomad Visa

Spain has officially launched its long-anticipated Digital Nomad Visa, offering a new opportunity for non-European Union nationals to live and work remotely from within Spanish territory.

This new visa is designed to attract remote workers, freelancers, and digital professionals who are employed by or contractually tied to companies located outside of Spain, aligning with the country’s broader strategy to modernize its economy and attract international talent in the post-pandemic digital era.

The Digital Nomad Visa allows eligible individuals to legally reside in Spain for an initial period of up to one year, with the possibility of renewal.

It also extends to close family members, making it a practical choice for digital workers looking to relocate with their partners, children, or dependent relatives.

Applicants must either hold a recognised university or postgraduate degree or demonstrate at least three years of relevant professional experience in their field. Additionally, applicants are required to have maintained a professional relationship with their current foreign employer or clients for at least three months prior to applying.

To qualify, individuals must prove that they work exclusively or primarily for companies located outside Spain. Self-employed individuals are allowed to provide services to Spanish companies, provided that this activity does not account for more than 20% of their overall workload.

Spouses or unmarried partners, dependent children, and even dependent parents or relatives may accompany the primary applicant under the same visa, further emphasising Spain’s commitment to attracting long-term remote residents.

Visa fees differ depending on the applicant’s nationality. For Indian nationals, the application fee is around ₹7,100. Citizens from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Bangladesh may face different charges due to reciprocal agreements.

All fees must be paid at the time of application submission, and applicants are advised to verify updated rates and requirements with the nearest Spanish consulate or BLS International Visa Centre.

Financial stability is a core requirement. Applicants must earn a minimum of 200% of Spain’s monthly minimum wage, which translates to approximately €2,520 per month in 2025. For each family member added to the application, the financial threshold increases by 75% for the first dependent and 25% for each additional one. Educational or professional proof must also be submitted, either in the form of a recognised university or business school degree or through evidence of relevant work experience exceeding three years.

Applications must be submitted in person at designated BLS centres or through a legally authorized representative. The Spanish authorities typically provide a decision within 10 working days, although delays may occur if additional documentation or an interview is required. The visa also acts as a residence permit, eliminating the need for a separate residence card, although applicants may opt to obtain one after arrival.

With this visa, Spain joins the ranks of forward-looking countries adapting to the rise of remote work by offering flexible yet secure legal pathways for digital professionals, thus cementing its status as one of Europe’s most appealing destinations for global talent.
