A massive power outage has swept across large parts of Spain and Portugal, prompting Spain to declare a state of emergency as authorities in both countries race to restore electricity and stabilise essential services.

The blackout, described as one of the most severe in recent history for the Iberian Peninsula, has caused widespread disruption to homes, transportation networks, hospitals, and critical infrastructure.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid speculation. “We must focus on what is most important, which is restoring electricity to our homes,” Sánchez said, adding that Red Eléctrica, Spain’s national grid operator, is working tirelessly to identify the cause of the failure and restore full supply.

He confirmed that nearly 50% of Spain’s national electricity supply had already been restored by late evening. “All state resources are being mobilised. We’ll be working flat out, all night long. With professionalism and commitment,” Sánchez emphasised after visiting Red Eléctrica’s headquarters.

Meanwhile, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro confirmed that Portugal has also been severely affected and is working in close coordination with Spain and European partners to address the situation. “We are in constant contact with security forces, civil protection, the armed forces, hospitals, and fuel supply companies to ensure the response capacity in essential infrastructure and support for those in need,” Montenegro said. He urged, “There is no time to waste!”

Emergency services across Spain and Portugal remain on high alert, and additional support measures are being considered if the situation persists.
