Slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei Buried at Iran’s Holiest Shrine After Week-Long Funeral

Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly buried on Friday at the Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, the country’s holiest Shia site, concluding a week of public mourning that spanned multiple cities across two nations.

The burial took place more than four months after Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on his compound in Tehran. While Iranian state media reported that millions of mourners attended the public processions, the final burial itself was conducted as a private service.

A Cross-Border Procession Delayed by War

The funeral events, which had been reportedly severely delayed due to ongoing military conflict, began in Tehran where thousands gathered to pay their respects. From the capital, Khamenei’s coffin traveled through a series of major religious hubs, including Qom in Iran, as well as the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, before finally arriving in Mashhad.

Carried alongside the former Supreme Leader were the coffins of four family members who perished in the same airstrike. Notably absent from the public ceremonies was Khamenei’s son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was not seen at any of the week's events.

Mourners Demand Revenge Amid Escalating Tensions

During the final procession in Mashhad, massive crowds dressed in black waved Iranian flags and held portraits of the late leader. The atmosphere was reportedly charged with grief and anger, as mourners chanted slogans targeting the United States and President Donald Trump, demanding immediate retaliation for the assassination. Due to the overwhelming density of the crowd, authorities ultimately used a helicopter to transport Khamenei’s coffin for the final leg of the journey to the shrine.

As the private burial concluded, unconfirmed explosions were reported near Bushehr, Choghadak, and Konarak. While the US military explicitly denied launching new strikes in Iran today, the developments underscore the deep uncertainty gripping the region.
