Six people were killed, including two on the ground, when a small plane crashed into a densely populated neighbourhood in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Thursday afternoon, according to reports.
AMREF Flying Doctors had confirmed that one of its aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS with registration 5Y-FDM, was involved in a fatal crash earlier today. The aircraft had departed from Wilson Airport at 2.17 pm (local time), en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, before crashing in the Mwihoko area of Nairobi.
In an official statement, AMREF Flying Doctors said they are cooperating fully with aviation authorities and emergency response teams to determine the cause of the crash.
“Our immediate focus is on the safety and well-being of those on board and providing full support to their families and colleagues,” the organisation stated. “We are also offering all necessary assistance to the authorities as investigations continue”.
Authorities and emergency responders are currently on site, and a thorough investigation is underway to establish the facts behind the tragic incident.
