Senate blocks Trump-linked White House ballroom funding proposal: report

A key Senate official in the United States has blocked a proposal linked to security funding for US President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom project, according to a Reuters report, creating fresh hurdles for Republicans pushing the broader spending legislation.
The proposed ballroom project has remained politically contentious, with Democrats accusing Republicans of prioritising an expensive White House expansion at a time when Americans continue to face economic pressure and rising living costs.
Republicans, however, have defended the proposal, arguing that upgraded infrastructure and additional security arrangements are necessary for presidential events and operations.
The setback came after Senate parliamentary review reportedly determined that the ballroom-related funding could not move forward under the fast-track budget procedure Republicans were attempting to use, as per Reuters.
The ruling may force lawmakers to either revise the proposal or seek broader bipartisan support in the Senate.
The White House ballroom project has drawn national attention ever since plans emerged to replace a historic section of the presidential complex with a larger event facility.
While Trump has maintained that private donations would support the construction, critics and preservation groups have continued to raise concerns over public spending, heritage issues, and executive authority tied to the redevelopment.
Legal challenges against the project are also continuing in US courts, even as construction-related work proceeds.
