Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, most commonly known by his initials MBS, was vocal about Saudi Arabia’s stance of equipping nuclear artillery. In a rare interview with the western media on Sept 20, he said that the Saudis have suspended US-brokered talks with Israel.
Saudi prince takes offensive stance against Iran
In the interview, MBS stated that the Arab country will equip itself with nuclear weapons if its foe in the land, Iran, does too.
Iran, a Shiite cleric country, and Saudi Arabia hold religious differences and have been in an alleged proxy conflict.
Although Iran has denied seeking a nuclear weapon, it has breached the uranium enrichment limits. These limits were diplomatically agreed upon when the then US president, Donald Trump, tried to curb Iran’s nuclear programme in 2015.
In reply to this, the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has also taken an offensive stance. MBS’s words, “If they get one, we have to get one,” mentioned in the interview have also put a confirmation over this.
Saudi agrees US-brokered deal with Israel
In the interview, MBS also mentions that the normalisation of relations with Israel is getting “closer” and denies reports of the US-brokered deal with Israel being dissolved.
The deal between these two Gulf powers is seen as a step towards developing ties among the Islamic regimes with the Israeli state.
The deal is seen as a security and economic pact between the two countries, with the US pushing for it.
Saudi Arabia has been seeking a ‘security treaty’ with the US in return for changing its stance with Israel.
Demands from both parties end up at Palestine
Turbulence in Tel Aviv for the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has made the country review the deal with Saudi, which demands concessions from Israel over the Palestinian conflict.
Saudi has stood clear with its words for Israel, which are reiterated by MBS, “Without progress with Ramallah (Palestine), there could be no progress with Riyadh.”
