In its biggest drone strike since the war began, Russia launched 273 drones against Ukraine early Sunday morning, causing widespread damage, as per reports. Ukrainian officials confirmed the attack as the largest of its kind to date, surpassing the previous high of 267 drones in February 2025.
Most of the drones reportedly targeted Kyiv and the eastern regions of Ukraine. In the Obukhiv district near Kyiv, a 28-year-old woman was killed and at least three others, including a 4-year-old child, were injured. Several buildings suffered damage as the attack continued for hours.
Ukraine’s Air Force responded by intercepting 88 of the drones, while another 128 reportedly crashed without causing harm. Air raid sirens were active in Kyiv and surrounding areas for nearly nine hours.
This latest attack comes shortly after failed peace talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations. The discussions, aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, ended without agreement on a ceasefire. The only outcome was a mutual deal to exchange prisoners.
US President Donald Trump is expected to speak with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders on Monday in an effort to revive ceasefire negotiations.
Ukrainian officials criticised Russia for launching the attack shortly after the peace discussions. Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s disinformation centre, said Russia often uses military aggression during peace talks to intimidate and gain leverage.
The Ukrainian government has called for increased international support for its air defence systems and renewed diplomatic pressure on Russia to reach a peace agreement.
