Rioters attack minority Hindu population in Bangladesh; burn houses, temples
The western neighbour with whom India shares Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, has been gripped by significant unrest. As the rioters continue to hold violent protests opposing quota reforms in the country, reports suggest minorities in Bangladesh are in distress followed by the resignation of PM Sheikh Hasina on Aug 5.
Though Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman urged the citizens to remain patient and maintain peace after forming an interim government, the unrest prevailed in the Islam-majority country.
While a report suggested the blazing of the ISKCON Temple in Bangladesh’s Meherpur, another video doing rounds on social media showed an attack on Kali Mata temple in Kandipura village of Narsingdi district.
The spokesperson of ISKCON India took to his X, “As per the info I have received, one of our ISKCON centres (rented) in Meherpur (Khulna division) was burnt including with the deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra Devi.”
He added that three devotees who lived in the centre “somehow managed to escape & survived.”
A live video by another Facebook user showed rioters targeting houses of Hindus.
According to reports, a Hindu Awami League leader Haradhan Roy and his nephew were lynched by the mob in Rangpur town.
Shops were also looted and set on fire by the rioters, according to visuals on social media. Many users on social media reported the killing of a Hindu man on the night of Aug 5 by rioters, while his wife was also seriously injured and hospitalised.
Meanwhile, a Facebook user of Dhaka shared a photo of Muslim clerics securing Comilla Manoharpur Temple from the rioters.
Moreover, Students were seen protecting temples and minorities from attacks in Bangladesh as per footage shared by X user in Dhaka, reportedly taken around 3 am on Aug 5.
