Prince Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of Ismaili muslims, passes away at 88

Prince Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of millions of Shia Ismaili Muslims and a prominent global philanthropist, passed away in Lisbon on February 4 at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. The Aga Khan Development Network confirmed the news.
Believed to be a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad, born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1936, Khan had succeeded his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, as Imam at just 20 years old in 1957.
Renowned for his contributions to development and humanitarian causes, the Aga Khan founded the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), one of the world’s largest private development organisations.
Beyond his philanthropic work, the Aga Khan was known for promoting a progressive interpretation of Islam rooted in compassion, tolerance, and human dignity.
A respected voice in international diplomacy and development, the Aga Khan received numerous accolades, including honorary degrees and state honors from various countries.
