Pakistan’s BRICS hopes dashed, Turkey gets in
Pakistan has suffered a major setback in its hopes of becoming a member of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa – now also including Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates).
Due to strong opposition from India, Pakistan has not been able to secure membership in BRICS. Moreover, it has also failed to secure a place in the list of partner countries. On the other hand, Turkey has been included in the list of BRICS partner countries.
Russia has recently announced 13 new partner countries, including Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. These countries will become BRICS partner countries from January 1, 2025. Pakistan, which was seeking a place in BRICS with the support of China and Russia, has not been included in this list.
Many believe that due to a change in the stance of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the Kashmir issue, India did not oppose Turkey's candidature.
This failure of Pakistan is being severely criticised within the country. Foreign affairs expert Mariana Babar has reportedly termed it a “complete failure” of Pakistan’s foreign ministry. She reportedly said that even a country like Nigeria has performed better than Pakistan and has become a BRICS partner country.
