Nine killed in shooting at Jewish festival on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, one attacker shot dead

At least nine people were killed after gunmen opened fire during a Jewish religious gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Saturday evening, triggering panic among hundreds of attendees. Police said one of the attackers was shot dead during a counter-operation, while the second alleged shooter remains in critical condition. Several others, including police personnel, were injured in the attack.
Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots as chaos unfolded at the popular beachside location. Emergency services rushed to the spot, and visuals from the scene showed bystanders attempting to administer CPR to the injured as authorities secured the area.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” saying police and emergency responders were working to save lives. He said he had spoken with senior federal and state officials and urged people in the area to strictly follow instructions issued by New South Wales Police.
New South Wales Police said they began responding to the incident shortly before 8 pm local time, warning people at the scene to take shelter. In a later update, police confirmed that 10 people had died, including one of the suspected attackers.
The shooting occurred on the opening night of Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish festival. According to local media reports, the attack began shortly after 6.30 pm when a large crowd had gathered on the beach to mark the occasion. An attendee told local newspapers that the attackers appeared to fire indiscriminately, targeting children and elderly people among the crowd.
Authorities have launched a major investigation as security has been tightened across Sydney, while officials continue to verify details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the attack.
