Nine dead in Indonesia after volcano eruption
Updated: Nov 4th, 2024
On Sunday night, Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in Flores, Indonesia, erupted multiple times, leading to the deaths of nine people, according to reports.
The overnight eruption raised the alert level to the highest in a four-tiered system. Reports indicate that five nearby villages were evacuated immediately.
In a press release issued on Monday, authorities warned that Mount Lewotobi’s activity level had increased and advised villagers to wear masks to avoid the effects of volcanic ash.
Indonesia sits on the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area of high seismic activity due to multiple tectonic plates.
Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki is located in the southeastern part of the country. This eruption follows a series of eruptions from different volcanoes in Indonesia.
In May, a volcano on the remote island of Halmahera, Mount Ibu, caused the evacuation of people from seven villages. North Sulawesi's Ruang volcano also erupted in May, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people.
