A trial against seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence in Diego Maradona’s death has begun in Argentina, as per reports. Diego Maradona, who died at the age of 60, suffered a cardiac arrest while under home care in Buenos Aires province, two weeks after undergoing a procedure to treat a subdural hematoma, a blood clot in his brain.
As per reports, in 2021, A 20-member team was formed to investigate Maradona’s death, and they submitted a report, accusing the medical team of acting in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless” manner. In March 2025, the initial trial began but it reportedly ended in a mistrial after one of the three judges, Julieta Makintach, stepped down after criticism grew over her participation in a documentary related to the case.
The accused, Maradona’s personal doctor, Physician Leopoldo Luque, was with him during his final years, Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, Psychologist Carlos Diaz, are facing trials, all have pleaded guilty of manslaughter with implied malice and if they are found guilty, they can face sentences ranging from eight years up to 25 years.
The defence has reportedly maintained a clear stance that Maradona passed away because of the medical conditions, and no crime was committed.
As per reports, Mario Baudry, the lawyer for the footballer’s youngest son Diego Fernando Maradona, reportedly urged that the court will understand the gravity of the situation ,what they have to judge, and above all, what Diego represented for Argentinians and for the world of football. Adding to that, he said that he hopes that the defendants are found guilty.
According to sources, Judges Alberto Gaig, Alberto Ortolani and Pablo Rolón will preside over the new trial at a court in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires. They’ll hear testimony from approximately 100 witnesses, evaluate evidence and ultimately deliver a verdict.
