New COVID-19 variant EU.1.1 emerges, cases reported in different states of the US

EU.1.1 is a distant descendant of Omicron

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, is tracking several new COVID-19 variants. On June 23, the agency announced the addition of more Omicron descendants to the list of new strains. 

New variant EU.1.1

Among the new variants being tracked by the CDC is EU.1.1. The variant is a more distant descendant of the XBB.1.5 variant that surged earlier this year. 

According to the CDC, EU.1.1 accounts for 1.7% of cases in the United States.

Cases in Utah of the US

Utah has sequenced the most EU.1.1 infections of any state, with nearly 100 cases reported by the state's public health laboratory to global virus databases. 

XBB.1.5 declines in the US

The descendant of Omicron, XBB.1.5, represents 27% of the cases in the US, according to the news reports. However, this is a 13% decrease from the reported 40% of cases on June 10.

Symptoms of the new variant have not been determined yet by the CDC.
