Amid job cuts in the US federal administration announced by US President Donald Trump, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has reportedly terminated  Chief Scientist Katherine Calvin.

Along with Calvin, Chief Technologist Indian-American AC Charania has also been fired, according to reports.

A NASA spokesperson further indicated that additional cuts should be expected.

Calvin, a climate scientist and an expert in Earth system modeling, joined NASA in January 2022 as both Chief Scientist and Senior Climate Advisor. Before joining NASA, she worked at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Joint Global Change Research Institute, focusing on climate change and energy systems.

Earlier in February, the administration announced a major restructuring of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), resulting in the elimination of 2,000 positions. Additionally, many remaining employees were placed on administrative leave globally.

This decision followed a federal court ruling that allowed the administration to proceed with reducing USAID staff both in the United States and abroad.
