Myanmar reduces Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence

Myanmar’s military-led government has reportedly reduced the prison sentence of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi by about one-sixth.
As per reports, Suu Kyi had been serving a total of 27 years in prison on multiple charges, including incitement, corruption, election fraud and violations of state secrets laws, which her supporters have described as politically motivated. The sentence reduction is understood to have cut her term by roughly four-and-a-half years.
Despite the reduction, she was not among the 4,335 prisoners released under a New Year amnesty announced earlier in the day by President Min Aung Hlaing, as per local reports.
The amnesty also included the commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment and a reduction of life sentences to fixed terms of 40 years.
Suu Kyi has not been seen in public since the conclusion of her prolonged trials, and her current whereabouts have not been disclosed by the authorities.
Her son Kim Aris had reportedly said he had received limited information about her condition, adding that her health was deteriorating.
