Nuno Loureiro, a 47-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, was shot dead at his residence on Gibbs Street on Monday night, according to authorities.

Brookline police said they responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment building on Gibbs Street at around 8.30 pm. Emergency medical teams transported a person suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to hospital. Police were informed the following morning that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.

Loureiro was also a parent of a student in the Brookline public school system, superintendent Bella Wong confirmed in a message sent to families on Tuesday.

Investigators have not released details about any suspects or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Brookline police detectives are leading the probe with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police and the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office said the case remains an active homicide investigation and that no further information is being made public at this stage. Echoing that position, Brookline Police Chief Jennifer Paster said authorities are limiting disclosures to safeguard the investigation and asked residents for patience.

Property records indicate Loureiro owned a unit in the apartment building where the shooting occurred. Gibbs Street is situated north of Coolidge Corner, between Harvard Street and Commonwealth Avenue, roughly a quarter-mile from the Florida Ruffin Ridley School.
