Middle East On The Brink: US Strikes Southern Iran; Tehran Retaliates With Barrage Across Gulf Neighbours And Jordan

A massive military escalation has engulfed the Middle East as the United States launched a fresh wave of aerial strikes against strategic targets across southern Iran, triggering a swift and violent counter-offensive from Tehran across multiple neighbouring nations.

Strikes hit several coastal and southern Iranian locations, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Chabahar, Konarak, and Sirik. Iranian authorities reported civilian casualties, including an attack in Sirik where local officials said a strike hit near a wedding celebration, leaving at least four dead and more than 50 injured. Seven deaths were also reported across Khuzestan province following missile strikes near Ahvaz and Aghajari.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the completion of its target package, stating the operations came in response to Iranian threats against international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and repeated attacks targeting American military personnel stationed in the region.

Tehran Strikes Back Across The Gulf

Within hours of the American operation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) initiated a widespread series of retaliatory missile and drone salvoes across the Gulf and broader region:

• Jordan: The IRGC claimed heavy ballistic missile attacks on Prince Hassan airbase and US Marine facilities. The Jordanian military confirmed 13 incoming missiles, noting ten were intercepted while three landed in unpopulated areas.
• Bahrain: Interior authorities issued emergency shelter warnings as air defence batteries engaged and destroyed incoming Iranian drones targeting the Sheikh Isa airbase area.
• Kuwait & Iraq: Kuwaiti air defence units actively engaged hostile targets overhead, while the IRGC claimed missile and drone strikes on US installations near Erbil in northern Iraq.

New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that Iran's armed forces possessed "unforgettable lessons" for Washington, with IRGC commanders vowing that offensive operations against US assets would continue until Washington halted its campaign.

Trump Issues Total Destruction Threat As Energy Markets Surge

Writing on social media following the military action, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning against further Iranian action, threatening complete devastation if Tehran continues its retaliatory strikes.

"If the failed nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level," Trump stated, claiming the US maintains "almost total control of the Hormuz Strait."

The widening conflict has sent immediate shockwaves through global energy markets. Brent crude futures surged past $95 a barrel in early trade, reflecting deep market anxieties over potential long-term disruptions to crude transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical bottleneck for global fuel supplies. Diplomatic fallout has also begun spreading internationally, with Peru becoming the latest nation to formally sever diplomatic ties with Tehran over the spiralling regional crisis.
