Mexico was shaken on Friday night after Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, the mayor of Uruapan in the state of Michoacán, was shot dead in front of the public during a day of the dead celebration.

Christopher Landau, the US Deputy Secretary of State for Mexico, offered condolences and said the United States stands ready to deepen security cooperation with Mexico to fight organised crime. He noted that Manzo had been photographed holding his young son just moments before he was killed.

Landau also attended the mayor’s burial on Saturday alongside Mexican Undersecretary of Government Juan Manzo and family members, offering solidarity during the tragedy.

Michoacán’s Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla condemned the assassination, calling it an act that has generated anger and deep grief.

“We are all dismayed and outraged,” the governor said. “We will act immediately to ensure there is justice and peace for the people of Uruapan.”

The Government of Michoacán issued an official statement expressing its deepest sorrow and promising that justice will be served.
