Massive snowstorms disrupt areas in US, UK, flights grounded
Over a dozen states in the United States are grappling with a severe winter storm affecting more than 60 million people.
Moreover, heavy snowfall and icy rains caused significant devastation throughout Europe on Sunday, too. Due to the snowstorm, hundreds of flights were cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
In the US as well, the snowstorm has forced millions of people to remain confined to their homes.
Furthermore, power outages caused by the storm have left people in darkness.
This storm, which began on Saturday, is expected to persist in the US until Monday. In Western America, around 2,000 flights have been cancelled due to the snowstorm.
In the northern regions of the UK, up to 40 cm of snow accumulation isolated rural areas and caused widespread power outages.
The National Grid made tireless efforts to restore electricity in areas like Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff. Almost all sports events were cancelled, though the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester United awaited a final inspection.
The runways at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport were temporarily closed, while operations at Leeds Bradford Airport were suspended.
Precautionary closures led to disruptions in road transportation, causing chaos, especially as families and students returning from holiday vacations faced stranded vehicles at numerous locations.
