Aviation Mishap Averted in Sydney as Two Planes Come Face-to-Face on Runway

A major aviation accident was narrowly avoided at Sydney International Airport on Sunday morning after a Jetstar Airbus A320 and a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 came dangerously close to each other on the airport’s taxiway.

The Jetstar pilot reportedly applied the emergency brakes in time after the two aircraft came into close proximity, preventing a potentially serious collision involving more than 100 passengers.

Jetstar flight forced to brake suddenly

The incident occurred at around 7 am as Jetstar flight JQ402 was taxiing towards the runway for its scheduled flight to the Gold Coast.

At the same time, a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 was being moved across a connecting taxiway with the help of a tug vehicle.

The two aircraft suddenly came dangerously close, prompting the Jetstar pilot to brake sharply.

The sudden stop caused a jolt inside the aircraft, leaving one member of the Jetstar cabin crew injured. The crew member received medical attention, while none of the passengers were reported injured.

Investigation launched

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Air Traffic Control authorities have launched investigations into the incident.

Initial information suggests that the operator of the tug moving the Qatar Airways aircraft may have failed to follow instructions issued by air traffic control. Investigators are expected to examine the movements of both aircraft, ATC communications and procedures followed during the incident.

Flight cancelled after incident

Following the incident, the Jetstar flight was cancelled and passengers were accommodated on another flight.

The near-miss has raised fresh questions over airport ground movement and runway safety, particularly the coordination between aircraft, ground vehicles and air traffic control.

The investigation is expected to establish how the two aircraft were allowed to come into such close proximity and whether any procedural failures contributed to the incident.
