Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes West Texas in US; tremors felt across 200 miles

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck the western Texas region of the United States at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), an independent scientific organization.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the EMSC stated that the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 50 miles west of Pecos, Texas, and around 45 miles northeast of Van Horn, Texas.

However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly stronger magnitude of 5.3, placing the epicentre 57 kilometres south of Whites City, New Mexico.

Following the tremor, the EMSC issued an advisory warning that aftershocks could occur in the coming hours or days. The organization urged the public to avoid damaged areas unless absolutely necessary.

Reports indicate that the quake's tremors were felt across a 200-mile radius, affecting an estimated 2 million people across parts of Texas and New Mexico.
