Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that she “begged” him for a photograph during the G7 Summit, calling the statement “completely made up”, as per reports.

President Trump reportedly claimed that Meloni was eager to take a picture with him and said he only agreed because he “felt sorry for her.” He further remarked that Meloni was “probably happy” that he spoke to her and that he did not have to engage with her.

Reacting sharply to the comments, Meloni said she was “astonished” and “frankly appalled” by Trump’s remarks. In a post on X, she stated that the US President’s claims were entirely false and criticized him for repeatedly making offensive comments about allied leaders.

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I don't know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his own allies,” Meloni said in the video. She added that Trump should show the same firmness toward the enemies of the West rather than toward friendly nations.

Emphasizing Italy’s dignity, Meloni declared, “One thing he must remember: I and Italy never beg.”

The controversy has also sparked a diplomatic reaction in Italy. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States, saying Trump’s remarks had offended not only Meloni but the entire Italian nation.
