Italy Imposes €121 million fine on Amazon for tax evasion and worker exploitation

Italian financial police have seized €121 m (₹1,099 crore) from Amazon’s Italian operations

Updated: Jul 25th, 2024

This is the largest seizure of its kind in the country and is linked to accusations of tax evasion and worker exploitation.

A spokesperson for the Italian financial authorities stated that the record-breaking seizure was due to the retailer’s methods for paying outsourced labor. These practices allegedly reduced the company’s tax liabilities while allowing it to underpay workers.

“The company illegally implemented mechanisms for fictitious operations, which enabled fraudulent tax claims and the exploitation of workers,” the official said.

Amazon responded with a statement claiming compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in its operating countries. They also asserted that they require the same from their business partners, but provided no further details.

Amazon has faced multiple legal and financial challenges in Italy in recent years. In April, the country’s antitrust regulator imposed a €10 m fine on the company for restricting consumer choices on its website.
