Israel security cabinet approves plan to occupy entire Gaza Strip amid ceasefire talks

Israel’s security cabinet on Monday approved a plan to capture the entire Gaza Strip and maintain a military presence there for an unspecified period, according to an Israeli defence official. If implemented, the move would significantly escalate Israel’s military operations in Gaza and is expected to face strong international opposition.

The plan reportedly includes relocating hundreds of Palestinians to southern Gaza — a move likely to involve forcible displacement and worsen the already severe humanitarian crisis in the region.

The cabinet’s approval came shortly after Israel’s military chief announced the mobilisation of tens of thousands of reserve soldiers. However, details of the plan — including its timing — have not been formally disclosed. The move is seen as part of Israel’s strategy to pressure Hamas into making concessions in ongoing ceasefire negotiations.

An Israeli defence official indicated that the plan is unlikely to be carried out until after US President Donald Trump completes his expected visit to the Middle East later this month. This leaves open the possibility that a ceasefire agreement could be reached before then.
