With fleeing of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, Syria witnessed 480 strikes in 48 hours across 1,400 locations in Syria by the Israeli military.

“In 48 hours, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) struck most of the strategic weapons stockpiles in Syria to prevent them from falling into the hands of terrorist elements,” said the Israeli military on Wednesday.

According to the IDF, Israeli Navy missile ships struck 2 Syrian Navy facilities, dozens of sea-to-sea missiles with ranges of 80–190 km, conducted 350+ aerial strikes and destroyed dozens of weapons production sites in Damascus, Homs, Tartus, Latakia, and Palmyra.

“Numerous strategic assets, including Scud missiles, cruise missiles, surface-to-sea, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, UAVs, fighter jets, attack helicopters, radars, tanks, hangars, and more,” said the IDF.

The military reported that it had dismantled 70-80% of the former Assad regime’s strategic military assets to prevent their capture by hostile groups, following the overthrow of Assad’s government by rebel forces. The rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of al-Qaeda, ended a 13-year-long civil war in the country.

Qatar on Wednesday said that it would soon reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, after President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in an Islamist-led rebel offensive.

The Gulf country ‘will soon reopen its embassy in the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic after completing the necessary arrangements’, foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said in a statement, as per a Lebanese media company.

Meanwhile, the United Nations stood against any violation of the territorial integrity of Syria.

A UN spokesperson said after Israel seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government.

When asked about media reports that recently the IDF targeted 320 Syrian military targets, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, said at a daily press briefing, “It is very clear that we stand against any violation of the territorial integrity of Syria. We are against these types of attacks.”

In the wake of the fall of al-Assad’s government, Israel ramped up its military operation in Syria, launching airstrikes against military weaponry and seizing control of a demilitarised buffer zone in the Golan Heights, Xinhua news agency reported.

Dujarric said that the United Nations continues to consider Golan Heights to be the occupied territory of Syria. “I think we were very clear about the violation of the disengagement agreement following the IDF occupation of the buffer zone,” he added.

“I think this is a turning point for Syria. It should not be used by its neighbours to encroach on the territory of Syria,” the spokesperson said.

Geir Pedersen, special envoy of the UN secretary-general for Syria, on Tuesday urged Israel to cease its military operations in Syria, emphasising the urgent need to halt all conflicts across the Middle East.

“A very troubling development is that we are continuing to see Israeli movements and bombardments into Syrian territory,” Pedersen said, “This needs to stop.”
