Hung parliament looms for France, violence breaks out on streets

Updated: Jul 8th, 2024

France's far-right National Rally seems still far from power, being unable to repeat its first-round surge in the second round of the parliamentary elections, while the country is heading for a hung house with the left alliance on top.

With exit polls showing the left-wing coalition leading, a majority still eludes the Left. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party is trailing second.

While Marine Le Pen's right-wing party, RN, is trailing third. The party was predicted in public opinion polls to become the largest party last week but it has since gone downhill for them.

In the meantime, there has been a huge uproar on the streets of Paris; and fierce clashes have taken place between the protesters and the police.  Scenes of fire were seen on the roads on the evening of July 7.

With no party or coalition looking at a majority, fears of political and economic instability have grown in France.
