Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly stopped an Indian vessel, Bhagya Lakshmi, while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. An audio recording has surfaced in which an Iranian official can be heard instructing the ship’s captain to immediately turn back.

In another incident, Iranian gunboats allegedly opened fire on an Indian vessel named Sanmar Herald, which was carrying oil from Iraq. However, no casualties were reported, and all crew members are safe.

Following these developments, the Government of India summoned the Iranian ambassador in New Delhi. During the meeting, India’s Foreign Secretary expressed concern over the firing incidents involving Indian ships and emphasised that the safety of Indian citizens and vessels is a top priority. India also reminded Iran of its earlier assurances regarding safe passage and expects cooperation.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier stated that the Strait of Hormuz remained open after the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire. However, after the United States reportedly imposed restrictions on Iranian ports, Iran has responded by tightening control over the route.

Iran has now clarified that no vessel will be granted blanket approval and that every ship must obtain prior permission before passing through the waterway.

Apart from India, Iran also denied passage to a Chinese vessel named Sun Profit, forcing it to turn back due to lack of authorisation.

The Iranian Embassy in Mumbai has also stated via social media that no ship will be allowed to enter the Strait of Hormuz without prior approval.
