Hijack Alert On flydubai Flight From Dubai To Tel Aviv After 7500 Emergency Code

A flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted on Wednesday after transmitting emergency signals while flying over Saudi Arabia, prompting a security response from Israeli authorities.

Flight FZ1073, which was reportedly carrying around 180 passengers, initially transmitted transponder code 7700, the internationally recognised code for a general emergency, before transmitting 7500, a code associated with hijacking or unlawful interference.

According to Israeli security sources cited by Reuters, Israeli Air Force fighter jets were scrambled towards the aircraft following the alert. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held emergency consultations as authorities monitored the developing situation.

What do codes 7700 and 7500 mean?

Aircraft use specific transponder or “squawk” codes to alert air traffic controllers to emergencies. Code 7700 indicates a general emergency, which can cover a range of situations requiring immediate assistance.

Code 7500, however, is specifically associated with hijacking or unlawful interference. Under aviation procedures, air traffic controllers are expected to verify whether a pilot intentionally selected 7500. If the crew confirms it or fails to respond, authorities treat the situation as potential unlawful interference and initiate the relevant security procedures.

The transmission of 7500 does not by itself confirm that a hijacking occurred. The code can also be transmitted accidentally or because of a transponder-related issue, and authorities had not immediately established what caused FZ1073 to transmit the signal.
