Environmental activist Greta Thunberg and 12 international activists who have reportedly been detained by Israeli forces while aboard the humanitarian vessel Madleen, which was sailing in international waters en route to Gaza.

The Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), departed from Catania, Italy, carrying humanitarian aid destined for Palestinians in Gaza.

According to statements posted on the official social media accounts of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the vessel was intercepted on Monday in international waters by Israeli forces. A video shared by Greta Thunberg herself surfaced online shortly after the reported incident.

“If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by Israeli occupational forces,” Thunberg says in the video.

“I urge all my friends, family, and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible,” she adds.

The Madleen was expected to reach the coast of Gaza by June 7, carrying essential medical supplies, food, and other humanitarian items for Palestine.

The Israeli government has not yet officially responded to the incident. However, it has consistently stated that it will not allow unauthorised vessels to reach Gaza, citing security concerns.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has called on international bodies and human rights organisations to intervene and secure the release of the detained activists.
