France has reportedly started providing €1 meals to all university students to help them deal with rising living costs.  Earlier, the discounted meal was only available for students from low-income families or those receiving financial aid, while others had to pay the regular price of €3.30.

As per reports, the decision came after student unions demanded that affordable food should be made available to every student. The meal includes a starter, a main course and a dessert, making it a complete and budget-friendly option for students.

Many students believe the move will help reduce their monthly expenses. An 18-year-old student in Paris said he eats at the university canteen around 20 times a month. Earlier, he spent nearly €60 every month on meals, but now he will spend only €20. He added that the money saved could be used for other activities like going out occasionally or eating at a restaurant.

The scheme has reportedly been introduced at a time when many students in France are facing financial difficulties.

As per reports, around 667,000 students benefited from the €1 meal scheme in 2024, according to university restaurant operator Crous. Officials are now expecting the number to increase further after the scheme was expanded for all students.

France’s Higher Education Minister Philippe Baptiste reportedly said the government will provide extra support for the programme while also ensuring food quality and proper working conditions for canteen staff.
