Former Costa Rican President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias has had his US visa revoked, according to reports. Arias, 84, who played a key role in brokering peace in Central America, reportedly received a brief email from US authorities informing him of the decision. However, no official explanation was provided.
At a press conference in San José, Arias reportedly stated that he had “no idea” why his visa was canceled. However, he hinted that it could be linked to either his recent criticism of US President Donald Trump or his diplomatic engagement with China during his presidency from 2006 to 2010.
As per reports, the visa revocation came just weeks after Arias publicly criticised Trump, comparing his leadership style to that of a Roman emperor. While Arias reportedly suggested that it was the US State Department, rather than Trump himself, that made the decision, the timing has raised speculation.
Arias also reportedly pointed to his 2007 decision to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and establish relations with China as a possible reason for revocation.
