First Time in History: Air-Raid Sirens Sound Across Mecca as Escalating Houthi Strikes Target Saudi Arabia

The Directorate of Saudi Civil Defence issued unprecedented air-raid warnings across the holy city of Mecca and several major urban centres along the kingdom’s western coast, marking the first time in history that Mecca has been placed under a formal aerial threat alert.

The short-lived sirens were activated following a barrage of drone and ballistic missile strikes launched by Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen.Emergency warnings were flashed via Saudi Arabia's National Early Warning Platform across Mecca, Jeddah, Taif, Abha, Jazan, and the key Red Sea oil-exporting terminal at Yanbu.Air traffic bound for Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina was temporarily halted during the security scramble.

Authorities quickly lifted the emergency status after intercepting and clearing incoming threats.Writing on social media platform X, the Directorate of Saudi Civil Defence confirmed that the immediate danger had passed in Mecca, urging residents to follow safety guidelines, avoid gathering in public spaces, and refrain from filming defense operations.

Heaviest Barrage in Years Ignites Regional Tensions

The alarming sirens in Islam's holiest city come on the back of the heaviest aerial offensive mounted against Saudi territory in recent years. Over the preceding 48 hours, waves of Houthi drones and ballistic missiles slammed into key energy infrastructure and military sites, setting oil facilities ablaze and leaving dozens wounded across the country.

The rebel group also claimed responsibility for a large-scale strike against the King Khalid Airbase in Khamis Mushait, using long-range munitions fired from positions within Yemen.

In response, Saudi military assets and allied Yemeni forces launched retaliatory air strikes against Houthi strongholds near the city of Taiz.

Houthis Deny Direct Targeting of Islam's Holiest Site

As regional alarm intensified, representatives from the Houthi politburo strongly rejected claims that their strikes were directed at holy sanctuaries.Hazem al-Assad, a senior Houthi official, dismissed reports of drones heading toward Mecca as a "worn-out lie" intended to rally diplomatic support for Riyadh.

However, al-Assad warned that military operations against Saudi state and military targets would escalate further so long as Riyadh persisted with its campaign in Yemen.
