Failed Israeli mission in Lebanon leaves 41 dead
At least 41 people were killed and about 40 others injured after an Israeli military operation in eastern Lebanon failed to recover the remains of missing Israeli pilot “Ron Arad”. The raid took place overnight in the town of Nabi Chit, as per reports.
The Israeli army said the mission was carried out by special forces to search for the body of Arad, an Israeli airman who disappeared in Lebanon in 1986. However, the soldiers did not find any evidence related to him and later withdrew from the area.
According to reports citing Lebanese officials, the operation involved heavy airstrikes and clashes between Israeli troops and fighters from the group Hezbollah. The fighting caused major destruction in the town damaging houses and buildings. Residents reported hearing loud explosions during the night.
Israeli commandos reportedly arrived in helicopters and entered a cemetery where they believed Arad’s remains might be buried. When the operation was discovered, clashes started with local fighters and residents. Israeli jets then reportedly carried out dozens of airstrikes to help the troops leave the area safely.
The Israeli military confirmed that no Israeli soldiers were injured in the mission. Officials said the country will continue efforts to find missing soldiers and bring them home, as per reports.
Ron Arad was an Israeli Air Force navigator who went missing in 1986 after his aircraft crashed during a mission over Lebanon, he was believed to have been captured by militants and Israel has searched for information about his fate for nearly 40 years.
The failed mission has increased tensions between Israel and Hezbollah and has raised concerns about further conflict in the region.
