Donald Trump planning to end citizenship by birth in US

US President-elect Donald Trump emphasised on ending birthright citizenship in the US and ‘deporting everyone who is illegally in the US’, in a media interview.

Birthright citizenship was enacted as part of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which was ratified in 1868. It says: “All persons born or naturalised in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” 

On ending the birthright citizenship, he reportedly said, “I think you have to do it,” Trump said regarding the deportation effort. “It’s a very tough thing to do. It’s — but you have to have, you know, you have rules, regulations, laws. They came in illegally. You know, the people that have been treated very unfairly are the people that have been online for 10 years to come into the country.”

However, Trump said that he is willing to collaborate with Democrats to pass legislation that would allow ‘Dreamers’ — undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children — to stay in the country.

According to data of the National Institute of Justice published this September, “From 2012 to 2018 in Texas, the total violent crime arrest rate was 213 per 1,00,000 for US-born citizens and 96.2 per 100,000 for undocumented immigrants”.
