Dominican Republic confirms 218 deaths in nightclub roof collapse

The Government of the Dominican Republic has confirmed that 218 people have died following the tragic collapse of the Jet Set Night Center. As of Thursday morning, 189 individuals have been rescued alive, according to an official statement released by authorities.
The statement, issued by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), emphasises the continued efforts of rescue and recovery teams. Emergency responders, technical personnel, and brigade members have been working around the clock under the coordination of the COE. Authorities affirmed that the search will continue until every individual is accounted for and no one remains under the rubble.
In support of families and affected citizens, the government is maintaining the availability of essential services. Psychosocial support is being offered in the incident area, and citizens can reach out for help via the information hotline.
Authorities have pledged to continue providing official updates as new information becomes available.
President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning.
What happened?
A devastating structural collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
More than 500 people were injured in the incident. Up to 1,000 people were believed to be inside the club at the time of the accident, reported local media.
