A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 was forced to make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday after one of its engines caught fire shortly after takeoff, as per reports.
Videos circulating on social media captured flames coming from the aircraft’s left engine as it was in the air. The flight, identified as DL446, had departed for Atlanta when the incident occurred.
The pilots reportedly promptly declared an emergency and requested to return to the airport. Air Traffic Control worked to clear the route for the aircraft while alerting emergency response teams on the ground.
Upon landing, airport fire crews confirmed that the engine fire was fully extinguished. All passengers and crew members were reported safe, with no injuries.
According to Flightradar24 data, the aircraft initially headed over the Pacific Ocean before turning back toward Los Angeles, flying over areas including Downey and Paramount as the crew executed safety checks and prepared for landing. The plane reportedly maintained stable flight throughout the emergency.
Passengers described hearing the captain inform them that emergency teams were inspecting the aircraft to ensure the fire was completely out before allowing them to de-board.
