Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday reportedly proposed a four-point roadmap to promote lasting peace in the Middle East during talks with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as regional tensions continue to escalate.

As per local reports, Xi’s proposal emphasised peaceful coexistence, respect for national sovereignty, coordination between development and security, and safeguarding the international rules-based order.

Xi observed that safeguarding the authority of the international rule of law. It cannot be used selectively, nor can the world revert to the law of the jungle. These remarks are widely seen as an implicit criticism of recent military actions involving the United States and Israel.

The proposal comes days after ceasefire talks between Washington and Tehran collapsed in Pakistan, further heightening instability in the region.

Xi reportedly made the remarks during Sheikh Khaled’s visit to Beijing, which took place against the backdrop of intensifying conflict. Iran has effectively restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz since early March for vessels it considers unfriendly, while the US has initiated a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.

The developments have disrupted oil shipments from Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, through the strategically vital waterway.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned China of potential economic consequences if it is found to be supplying military equipment to Iran, including the possibility of steep tariffs.

The tensions have also been reflected in maritime activity. A US-sanctioned, China-linked tanker recently crossed the Strait of Hormuz after initially turning back when the blockade came into effect, highlighting the complexities surrounding enforcement in the region.

China has consistently called for a ceasefire and has criticised military escalation, while indicating its willingness to play a constructive role in resolving the conflict.

Further diplomatic developments are expected, with Xi likely to hold talks with Trump in Beijing next month.
