China has introduced a temporary visa waiver for citizens of the United Kingdom and Canada, allowing short-term travel without prior visa approval.

The policy came into effect from February 17, 2026, to December 31, 2026. During this period, holders of ordinary passports from both countries can enter China without a visa and stay for up to 30 days for purposes such as business, tourism, visiting family or friends, cultural exchanges, and transit.

The move follows a recent visit to China by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which he held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders agreed to ease travel restrictions as part of efforts to improve bilateral engagement.

Starmer stated that the relaxed travel rules would support greater business interaction and economic cooperation between the countries. However, the decision has drawn criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised over human rights issues and national security implications tied to closer relations with Beijing.

Chinese authorities clarified that travelers who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the visa-free arrangement will still be required to obtain a visa before entering the country.
