Canadian leader Jagmeet Singh responds to Donald Trump’s comments on Canada

In a strong response to Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting the possibility of the US taking over Canada following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, took to social media to express his stance.

On X (formerly Twitter), Singh shared a video, stating he had a direct message for the former US president. Singh’s post read, “He said we are good neighbors. But if you pick a fight with us, there will be a price to pay,” adding further, “Our country’s not for sale. Not now, not ever.”

Singh emphasised the pride Canadians take in their country and culture. He highlighted the ongoing support Canadians offer globally, noting that Canadian firefighters are currently working in Los Angeles to fight the devastating forest fires. Singh pointed out, “We show up and support our neighbors, but if Donald Trump thinks of picking a fight with us, there will be a price to pay.”

This latest exchange follows a statement from Donald Trump after Prime Minister Trudeau’s unexpected resignation, where Trump hinted at a possible merger between the US and Canada. In a separate response, Trudeau made it clear that there was no possibility of Canada and the US merging, firmly rejecting Trump’s suggestion.

I have a message for Donald Trump.

We're good neighbours.

But, if you pick a fight with Canada - there will be a price to pay. pic.twitter.com/o60c4qIyza
