At least 37 dead after passenger bus plunges into ravine in southern Peru

At least 37 people were killed and 13 others injured early Wednesday after a passenger bus crashed and fell into a deep ravine in the Ocoña Valley of southern Peru, authorities confirmed.

According to initial reports, the bus collided with another vehicle before veering off the road and plunging into the gorge. Rescue operations began around 12.30 am, with teams of firefighters, police, health personnel, and local volunteers working through the night to recover bodies and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Following the tragedy, the District Municipality of Ocoña issued an official statement expressing condolences and solidarity with the victims’ families.

In its message, the municipality said it joins the community in mourning the irreparable loss and offered prayers for the deceased, strength for their loved ones, and a quick recovery for the injured. It also extended gratitude to the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters, the National Police of Peru – Ocoña Police Station, the Ocoña Health Center, the Serenazgo staff, and Public Cleaning personnel for their tireless work in the rescue efforts.

Mayor Waldor Llerena Torres reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to unity and compassion, thanking residents and institutions who have been assisting since the early hours of the morning.

Authorities continue to provide support to the affected families as the nation mourns one of the deadliest road accidents in recent months.
