Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei, who considers Donald Trump a close ally, has reportedly directed the country to withdraw from the World Health Organisation (WHO), citing “significant differences” regarding the WHO’s management of global health issues.
This decision comes after a similar move by the US when Trump, on his first day back in office, announced his intention to exit the WHO.
Manuel Adorni, a spokesperson for Milei’s administration, confirmed that the president had instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein to begin the process of Argentina’s withdrawal. The announcement was made during a press briefing reported by a news channel.
Milei’s administration has expressed concerns over the WHO's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as its management of other global health matters. Argentina’s previous left-wing government had imposed long and harsh lockdown measures, which Adorni noted played a role in this decision. Additionally, there were concerns raised about the WHO’s alleged political influence and lack of independence from major world powers.
This move reflects similar criticisms previously levelled by Trump, who accused the organisation of mishandling the Covid-19 crisis and other global health issues, while also criticising the “unfairly burdensome” financial contributions expected from the US, its largest contributor.
