7 dead, widespread damage in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa pounds the Caribbean

At least seven people have been killed and hundreds of homes destroyed after Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, tore through Jamaica’s southwest coast before moving toward Cuba on Tuesday night, as per reports.
The hurricane, packing winds of up to 185 mph (295 kph), made reportedly landfall near the community of New Hope in St Elizabeth parish, leaving behind catastrophic destruction. Entire neighborhoods were flooded, trees uprooted, and roofs ripped off buildings as torrential rains and fierce winds battered the island.
The parish of St. Elizabeth was underwater, with hospitals sustaining damage and over half a million residents left without electricity. Emergency services are working to restore power and clear debris as floodwaters continue to rise.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that Melissa is regaining strength as it approaches eastern Cuba, where it is expected to make landfall as an extremely dangerous major hurricane within hours. Authorities across the region have issued urgent safety advisories:
Jamaica: While the storm moves away, authorities warn of lingering dangers from downed power lines, contaminated floodwaters, and potential carbon monoxide poisoning from poorly ventilated generators. Residents have been urged to stay hydrated and exercise caution during cleanup operations.
Haiti and the Dominican Republic: Severe flash floods and landslides are anticipated across southwestern Haiti and southern areas of the Dominican Republic, with communities at risk of isolation as rainfall continues.
Eastern Cuba: Officials warn of life-threatening storm surges, flooding, and destructive winds expected through Wednesday morning. Residents are being told to seek shelter immediately.
Bahamas and Turks & Caicos: Hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, and dangerous storm surges are expected across the southeastern and central Bahamas by Wednesday, with tropical storm conditions likely in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Bermuda: The island has been placed under a Hurricane Watch, with severe weather possible by Thursday night.
As the storm continues its path across the Caribbean, regional governments have mobilised emergency teams and urged residents to follow evacuation orders and official updates.
