A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Myanmar on Tuesday night, with tremors felt across parts of eastern India and Bangladesh, including Kolkata and Dhaka.

Seismic monitoring agencies reported that the quake occurred at around 9.04 pm, with the epicentre located approximately 30 kilometres from Sidoktaya in Myanmar. Data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) indicated that the epicentre lay east of Akyab, while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres.

Residents in several areas of West Bengal, particularly those in high-rise buildings in Kolkata, reported feeling brief but noticeable shaking. Office workers also said they experienced the tremors, which lasted only a few seconds.

This was the third earthquake reported in Myanmar over the past three days, according to EMSC. Authorities have not reported any casualties or damage so far.

Bangladesh also experienced the effects of the tremor, marking the second time in less than 24 hours that seismic activity was felt in the country. Earlier on Tuesday, a separate earthquake measuring 4.1 in magnitude was recorded at a depth of 150 kilometres, according to the National Centre for Seismology.
