22 monks arrested at Sri Lankan airport over allegedly carrying drugs in luggage

Sri Lanka’s customs officials have reportedly arrested 22 monks at the Colombo airport after allegedly finding 110kg of cannabis from their luggages while all the monks were returning from Thailand. 

During the investigation, custom officials reportedly found that all the 22 monks were mainly students studying in Sri Lanka, all were returning from Thailand’s four day trip which was sponsored by the unnamed person. Now, 22 monks are reportedly under 7 seven days custody before appearing in court.

Customs officials reportedly said that while checking their luggage each monk was found with around 5kg of Kush- particularly potent from the drug which was hidden in a false wall, the place where school related material and sweets were kept.

The Sri Lankan police reportedly arrested a 23rd monk from the suburb of Colombo who was supposed to have organized the trip. The police said that this 23rd monk told other monks that these parcels were a donation and a van would come to collect the packages. 

The police also said that monks potentially did not know what they were carrying, as per reports.
