The world is one, and connected now thanks to social media. Be it Monday blues ranting or Saturday fun night stories, people share anecdotes of their lives with the virtual world. Over 4.26 billion people worldwide were connected on social media in 2021; the number is projected to increase to almost six billion in 2027, as per an online survey company, Statista. Social media is a virtual gallery of thoughts, ideas, and visuals from one’s life.

FOMO issues!

Today, social media has become a necessity, if not a need. Everything is safe when used within limits, but social media perils can wipe out your mental peace. The excessive use of social media may lead to addiction and fear of missing out (FOMO). FOMO can become problematic, leading to anxiety, interrupted sleep, a lack of concentration, and dependence on social media to get pleasure.

More than 2000 patients were treated for social media addiction in Ahmedabad

The government mental hospital in Ahmedabad opened a de-addiction centre to offer therapy to patients suffering from social media addiction. Every month, a total of 30 patients visit that cell to get treatment.

So far, more than 2000 patients have been treated for social media addiction in Ahmedabad hospital. The Superintendent of the Government Hospital for Mental Health, Dr Ajay Chauhan, said that most of the young patients coming to cure social media addiction are teenagers.

These patients were seen feeling restless due to the absence of social media. Some teenagers also have the problem of becoming more aggressive towards their parents because of their constant use of social media.

Watch your content and time!

Psychiatrist Dr Devashish Palkar says, "Excessive social media usage is an unhealthy way of coping with life problems." There should be a fixed time to use social media every day. A half-hour of scrolling and consuming content is more than enough. He added, “The content we consume on social media matters a lot. Mental well-being can be maintained by consuming positive content for a fixed period during the day.”

So, carry out a social media detox and maintain a healthy lifestyle!
