What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21.

It is not yet known why this syndrome occurs, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics and health.

According to doctors, the primary symptoms of Down Syndrome include slow physical development, a slower pace of learning and understanding compared to other children, distinctive facial features such as a small nose and protruding facial features, and potential complications related to the heart, eyes, and hearing.

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder. Doctors suggest that if a child is born with this syndrome, it is essential to focus on therapy, education, and skill development during the first five years.

Moreover, the integrated support of family and society plays a crucial role in the child's development.

Regular check-ups and treatments for heart, eye, ear, and digestive system-related issues are necessary. A positive outlook is the key to supporting children with Down syndrome.
