Russia develops cancer vaccine, to distribute it for free

Updated: Dec 19th, 2024

According to reports, Russia has developed an mRNA vaccine designed to fight cancer, which will be distributed to the Russians at no cost from 2025.

The vaccine has been developed in collaboration with several research centers and is expected to be released for public use by early 2025.

How do mRNA vaccines work?

mRNA vaccines function by introducing a strand of mRNA that encodes a viral protein. Typically, this protein is a small fragment found on the outer surface of the virus. Importantly, individuals receiving an mRNA vaccine are not exposed to the virus itself and cannot contract the virus from the vaccine.

Once the mRNA is delivered into the cells, the body produces the viral protein. In response, the immune system identifies the protein as foreign and generates specialised proteins called antibodies. These antibodies recognise and neutralise pathogens by binding to them and signaling their removal from the body.

Notably in India, Cancer is affecting more young people. A new study showed that 20% of the cancer cases in the country are being seen in men and women below the age of 40.

The study by a Delhi-based non-profit foundation, showed that 60% below 40 cancer patients were men, while 40% were women.

Head and neck cancer (26%) were the most prevalent, closely followed by gastrointestinal cancers (16%) like colon, stomach, and liver. Breast cancer accounted for 15%, and blood cancers for 9%.
