IMA to stage 24-Hour strike to demand reforms
In a press conference held today in Ahmedabad, the IMA (Indian Medical Association) highlighted the two key dimensions of the incident: a crime against women and a blatant act of hooliganism. IMA has announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services by all modern medicine doctors, except for emergencies and casualties.
OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended during this period, starting at 6 AM on Aug 17 and ending at 6 AM on Aug 18, 2024
The IMA has issued a strong dissent on the recent rape and murder on a lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The association has asked for immediate action to address the growing violence against healthcare professionals and the lack of safety in hospitals.
The association emphasized that the attack has shaken the conscience of the nation and demanded swift and quick actions.
Demands raised by IMA:
Strengthening legal framework The IMA urged the government to expedite the passage of the Hospital Protection Bill of 2019, incorporating the amendments of 2023. This legislation would provide stronger protection to healthcare professionals and hospitals.
Enhanced security protocols The association called for hospitals to implement security measures comparable to airports. This includes declaring hospitals as safe zones, mandating CCTV surveillance, deploying adequate security personnel, and establishing clear security protocols.
Improved working conditions for resident doctors The IMA highlighted the need to address the long working hours and lack of adequate facilities for resident doctors. They demanded a review of the 36-hour duty shift and the provision of safe resting spaces and proper restrooms.
Thorough investigation and justice The association called for a swift and impartial investigation into the crime, with exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
Compensation for the victim’s family The IMA demanded appropriate and dignified compensation for the bereaved family of the victim.
