Youth assaulted by ex-girlfriend’s relatives, six booked in Anandnagar

A 21-year-old youth was allegedly beaten and threatened with a weapon by a group of five individuals, including the relatives of his former girlfriend, in the Anandnagar area of Ahmedabad, police said on Thursday.

As per the complaint filed by Mahesh Thakor, the incident occurred on the night of July 2, around 8.30 pm, at Krishnadham Auda Society, close to the Vastrapur railway crossing. Thakor, a resident of the same housing society and an employee at a local car wash, was reportedly attacked while on his way to return a friend’s scooter.

The assailants have been identified as Ashokbhai Chunara, Sanjaybhai Chunara, Shitalben Sanjaybhai Chunara, Anandbhai Ashokbhai Chunara, and Ushaben Ashokbhai Chunara — all residents of Krishnadham Auda. A sixth unidentified individual, whose identity is known to the victim by appearance, was also allegedly involved.

Thakor, in his complaint, said he was confronted by Sejal’s uncle Ashokbhai, who began abusing him over his past relationship with Sejal. The relationship, which had ended around four months ago under family pressure, had allegedly triggered resentment among her relatives.

According to Thakor, Ashokbhai blocked his path, hurled abuses, and physically assaulted him. Soon after, he called the other family members to the spot. The group, allegedly armed with a stick and a dhariya (a sharp-edged weapon), reportedly dragged Thakor and beat him with fists, kicks, and sticks. Ashokbhai is also accused of forcibly handing over the dhariya to Thakor and filming him while threatening to kill him, reportedly in an attempt to frame him.

After the assault, the accused fled the scene. Thakor returned home and narrated the incident to his mother and a friend. Encouraged by them, he approached the Anandnagar police station the following day to register a complaint.

As per Anandnagar police, a cross-complaint has also been registered by the girl’s side. Right now, we have not arrested anyone in the matter, but our investigation is ongoing.
